Kathleen Sebelius Nominated For HHS
President Obama announced yesterday that Kansas Governor Kathleen Sebelius will be his nominee for Secretary of Health and Human Services, at the same time announcing former Clinton administration official Nancy-Ann DeParle to head the newly created White House Office for Health Reform. Sebelius and DePearle are reported to know one another and be on friendly terms, promising no turf battles. Although I would much prefer to see Howard Dean nominated, Kathleen Sebelius is a fine choice. I greatly expected her to be tapped as Vice President when it became clear Hillary Clinton was out of the running. And, I was somewhat surprised to see her not named early in the Cabinet selections. Gov. Sebelius (now Secretary-nominee Sebelius) is a very popular and successful Demcratic governor from a deep red state and has a record on health reform. And, I have to say, she and Obama look good together. They appear to like each other and give off an easy confidence together, which can only help. I hope her confirmation goes smoothly, for all reasons.
